Re-selling on Poshmark, Ebay, Mercari and other online marketplaces is a great way to make some extra money. But what exactly can you sell on these platforms? And where can you get the inventory?

In this article we will explore a list of 12 things to sell on Poshmark, Ebay or any other platform. Finding and sourcing inventory to sell may be easier than you think, and you can start in your own home!

What Can You Sell on Poshmark?

You can sell almost anything! Clothes and accessories are more popular on Poshmark as it is well known as a fashion app, but you can also sell home décor, electronics, beauty and even pet products. For example, I have sold a hair straightener and a candle I never used.

12 Things To Sell On Poshmark

Let’s get to the point, where can you find things to sell on Poshmark?

1. Clothes You No Longer Wear

You know that blouse hanging in the back, the one you haven’t worn in ages? It could be someone else’s favorite fashion find. Dive into your wardrobe and identify those gently used garments. Whether it’s a trendy jacket, a pair of vintage jeans, or those shoes you bought on a whim, there’s a market for them.

Pro Tip: Make sure to add measurements when you are listing clothes. It may take you a couple of extra minutes but the item will sell faster.

2. Shoes and Accessories You No Longer Wear

Your collection of shoes and accessories might be collecting dust, but for someone else, they could be the missing piece to complete their ensemble. Recognizable brands and unique styles are especially sought after. Polish those shoes, dust off those bags, and let them shine on the virtual shelves.

Pro Tip: If you have the original box for the shoes, mention it in the listing. People like getting the shoes in their box if possible.

3. Home Décor Items

Do you have furniture pieces or decor items that have lost their charm in your eyes? It’s time to give them a second chance. Furniture in good condition and unique decor items can sell for a good price.

Pro Tip: Consider listing heavier items on local marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. The logistics may be easier if you just meet with someone in person to hand the item.

4. Electronics You Never Use

Unopened gadgets, electronics you haven’t used in months—sound familiar? Identify those gadgets that never see the light and help them find a new home. Make sure to test the item and be transparent with descriptions to gain the trust of potential buyers. Personally, I’m seriously considering selling my Roomba, which I have only used once.

Pro Tip: Research market prices to ensure your unused electronics are competitively priced.

5. Gifts You Never Liked

Gifts you never quite vibed with? Instead of letting them gather dust in a corner, consider their resale potential. I used to feel guilty about selling gifts, but then I realized I couldn’t just keep them on a shelf when I knew I was never going to use them. OF course, you should approach this with sensitivity, especially if the gifts were from loved ones.

Pro Tip: Acknowledge the sentimental value but focus on finding them a new home where they’ll be cherished.

6. Ask Friends and Family for Inventory

Let your friends and family know you’re on the lookout for items they no longer need or use. It could be clothes and accessories, but also electronics, or even unique home decor items. People are often happy to declutter, especially when they know their items will find a second home.

Negotiate terms that work for both parties, ensuring everyone feels comfortable with the arrangement. I have had some people giving away their items for free because they were just happy to get rid of them but I have also come to an arrangement with some friends to do a 50/50 split of profits.

7. Thrift Stores

As you start gaining more experience reselling, you may want to venture beyond your personal circles and tap into the vast array of items waiting to be discovered in second-hand stores. Visit your local thrift stores to find hidden gems. Take your time to explore racks and shelves, you never know what vintage clothing or designer pieces you might stumble upon.

Pro Tip: Try visiting thrift stores in wealthy neighborhoods, you’ll be more likely to find high-end items in good condition, even designer brands!

8. Online Second-hand Stores

Explore the online second-hand stores like ThredUp and The RealReal. These platforms offer a curated selection of high-quality items, providing you with a convenient way to source inventory from the comfort of your home. As it is more convenient than going to the thrift store, the competition may also be higher when sourcing online.

Pro Tip: If you see an item that you would like to source but price is still a little high, you can like them to get an alert when price drops.

9. Garage Sales

Garage sales can be goldmines for finding unique items to add to your inventory. Start in your neighborhood and then check local listings or online platforms advertising to find more garage sales. Sellers are often willing to negotiate prices, especially at the beginning of the sale.

10. Discount Stores like Nordstrom Rack and TJMaxx

Discount stores often carry high-quality, brand-name items at significantly reduced prices. Nordstrom Rack and TJMaxx are great places to find NWT (new with tag) items which often sell for higher prices.

Pro Tip: If you are unsure about buying an item to sell, get it, list it and if it doesn’t sell soon, you can return it.

11. Sample Sales

Sample sales are great to find heavily discounted new designer items. Research sample sales in your area and mark your calendar for potential sourcing opportunities.

12. Liquidation Lots

This is a more advanced technique that I haven’t tried myself but I still wanted to mention it. I will probably get a liquidation box soon and review it in the blog.

What Are Liquidation Lots? Liquidation lots are bulk quantities of items sold by retailers looking to quickly sell excess inventory. These lots can include a variety of products, from clothing and electronics to home goods.

There are online platforms like B&G Trading and Fox Liquidation that specialize in liquidation sales. While liquidation lots are a great opportunity to get cheap inventory, they also come with risks. You never know what exactly you are getting! You can receive a couple of great finds but also items that are less popular

Pro Tip: Start small with liquidation lots to gauge the quality and marketability of the items.
